Microsoft’s word processing program for document creation is called simply â€Å"Word†, though it is sometimes referred to as MS Word. But now there is now a relatively new kid on the word processing block, called LibreOffice Writer. LibreOffice Writer is one program in an entire suite of programs called LibreOffice, with other applications comparable to Microsoft Office and Open Office. LibreOffice was created by former users from the Open Office community and includes Writer as its word processing program. LibreOffice also includes Calc for spreadsheets, Impress for Presentations, and Base for database functions. LibreOffice Draw is also included, specific for drawing, and includes many of the functions available through the Word Art feature of MS Word. LibreOffice Writer is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with on the word processing scene. It’s already proven itself better and more powerful than Open Office, which some say is now on its way out since most of the users have migrated over to LibreOffice. LibreOffice Writer is in fact believed to be moving quickly into position to one day compete with MS Word. Accessibility and Document Sharing All the LibreOffice suite programs are open source and available for Windows, OS X, and Linux. On the upside this means that bug fixes may come a bit quicker and more organized for new versions and security issues are handled more efficiently. The downside, of course, is that MS Office is proprietary which means you must have permission to do any alterations of the code if needed. Users have also reported some compatibility issues when using files that were created or saved in previous versions. This can make document sharing confusing and sometimes tricky, depending on which versions are used by parties involved. Spelling and Grammar Check The spell check feature in Microsoft Word and LibreOffice Writer work very similarly in that mistakes are underlined with a wavy red line. It’s safe to say that most users won’t see much difference in this feature. While Microsoft Word comes with spell check built-in, you will have to download the dictionary, thesaurus, etc. on LibreOffice. Once the spell check extensions are installed, however, there is little difference in this feature. LibreOffice also offers an auto correct feature similar to that of Word, it’s toggled on or off using a toolbar button, making it much easier to access than in Word. The grammar check in MS Word underlines grammar errors with a blue wavy line and LibreOffice Writer also uses this method to indicate grammar errors. Many users report that the grammar check feature for LibreOffice Writer is actually better than that of the grammar check feature in MS Word. Styles Templates As a long time user of MS Word, I have to admit I have always found the Styles and Templates difficult to use. For me, it was simply easier to format titles, headings, and paragraphs manually in most cases than it was to try and set up a saved Style that I could use with the click of a button. Those who use MS Word for more repetitive document work may disagree. From my brief review of the Styles feature in Writer, it appears to be somewhat less complicated to use. The Styles menu is located in a sidebar and includes preset formatting for things such as page numbers, internet links, quotation, emphasis, etc. Templates are designed to make life easier when it comes to formatting and polishing a document. Once you find a template you like, you can add your text and the result is a professional looking document complete with consistent formatting, color scheme, and everything else you desire. Both Word and LibreOffice Writer offer the use of templates. MS Word comes pre-loaded with many more templates than LibreOffice. This is perhaps the one drawback for LibreOffice Writer. In order to use a template, you must first find the one you want, download it, open it and give it a new name, and then save it to the My Templates folder. Although there are over 300 templates available for LibreOffice, they are all listed together without distinction as to which are for Writer, Calc, Draw, etc. MS Word wins here in that it lets you search templates for only Word templates, or only Excel templates, etc. Usability Although some users report that the LibreOffice Writer Interface is clunky and that the menu options can be confusing, I find it easier to navigate than the ribbon menus. Buttons are right there on the toolbar, represented by icons. Menus are definitely more cluttered, a throwback to the menus we used in the 1980’s versions of Word. But with a little know-how, you can customize your toolbar and reduce some of the clutter. In fact, while writing this article I purposefully switched from MS Word to LibreOffice Writer. I was able to open and manipulate the original Word file without any difficulty whatsoever and I truly saw no substantial difference in how I interacted with the two interfaces. The only drawback for LibreOffice Writer is that there is not currently a tablet or cloud-based version of the software. This will only matter to you if you are someone who has gotten used to actually using your MS Word from your phone or tablet to view and work with documents. Price After looking at the pros and cons of LibreOffice Writer and Microsoft Word as far as features, the price is where LibreOffice Writer takes the trophy. Although Microsoft Word offers a 30-day free trial version, you must pay for the full version and pay fees to upgrade to any future versions. To use Word on more than the allowed number of devices, you must pay additional licensing fees. Additional language packs involve more fees. Even their cloud-based applications hit you in the wallet, charging a recurring monthly fee. If you cannot make your payment for whatever reason, you would then risk losing access to all your documents. LibreOffice, on the other hand, is completely free to use. Simply go to the LibreOffice site and download the latest version of the software. It takes a matter of minutes and you are up and running. Extensions and Templates can be installed at no additional charge. The program can be installed simultaneously with MS Word and/or Open Office, which means that you could download a copy today and try it out without having to alter your existing setup. If you don’t like LibreOffice Writer for any reason, you can simply go back to using Word. Other Features With LibreOffice, macro scripting languages are supported for multiple languages including JavaScript, Python, LibreOffice Basic, and Beanshell. VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) is supported through import and export functions. Microsoft Office supports only VBA or Visual C# or Visual Basic through automation. If your projects routinely require the use of images, audio or digital files, you’ll find these are far more easily imported and supported in LibreOffice Writer than in MS Word. LibreOffice Writer also has extended PDF export options over MS Word. MS Word supports more functions such as complex outline numbering, complex rich text formatting in comments, decorative page borders, watermarks and view options such as the horizontal split document, outline and draft view but many of these are possible in LibreOffice via free extensions or a work around. In conclusion, it’s clear that LibreOffice Writer can actually replace MS Word for many basic and intermediate Word users. In fact, those using MS Word for simple document creation and writing projects likely won’t even notice any absent features. Power users may have to install extensions and make use of templates in order to get close to the feature packed Word experience they are used to. But in my experience, LibreOffice Writer will work as well as Word for most users without much modification at all. The trade-off, of course, is that LibreOffice Writer may be slower to develop components for integration with other technologies such as mobile and cloud applications. Because developments and bug fixes are developed and implemented by volunteer users rather than paid dedicated staff at Microsoft, they take a bit longer but in the end are more user focused. So while LibreOffice is open source and therefore easy to modify and customize, it may take a little more effort on the user end to make those modifications. The main reasons to switch from using MS Word to LibreOffice Writer are cost and control. LibreOffice writer provides a completely free alternative to MS Word. There is no worry that non-payment of renewal fees will restrict future access to documents. Users will no longer be forced to pay licensing fees for new and only slightly revised versions of Word or for permission to use the software on additional devices. It would seem the LibreOffice Writer would be a tremendous cost savings venture for many governments and public entities including schools, emergency personnel, public boards, etc. There is absolutely no cost involved with this software, so money currently being allocated for Microsoft Office software licensing, renewal fees, and multiple users fees could be allocated for more important things. Because the LibreOffice Writer interface so closely resembles older versions of MS Word, there would also be very little if any re-training needed for personnel. So after an initial review of LibreOffice Writer in comparison to Microsoft Word, I would have to recommend that everyone download a copy of LibreOffice today and start using LibreOffice Writer for their daily projects. It really is a seamless process to switch between LibreOffice Writer and MS Word, so there’s no reason not to give it a try. Use LibreOffice Writer for a few months to make sure it will do what you specifically need it to do. And then bid Microsoft Office and their licensing fees farewell for good. For the truly brave, the next step in freeing yourself from corporate control naturally would be to switch your entire computer system to Linux, but that’s a bit more complex. I think for most people, making the switch from Microsoft Office to LibreOffice will save them substantial money and be enough adventure for this year at least. Bullying, compared to smoke, is widespread and causes destruction in every life it touches. The tormentor envelopes their victim in fear and a sense of uneasiness that cannot be divided into categories--such as some websites claim--but instead, one because all the bully can do is connected to his or her victim in one way or another. Bullying touches many people in close proximity to one another . In fact, recent surveys have found that approximately 60 percent of students enrolled in middle school have been bullied in some form (Statistics: Is Bullying). The facts show that once started, bullying is incredibly difficult to stop, and wreaks havoc in every life it touches. Bullying affects middle school students in numerous ways. Some of the most common being physically, emotionally, and academically. Bullying, such as smoke, can cause serious health problems to students in middle school. Many bullies choose to physically harm their victims in a form of bullying called physical bullying. â€Å"Physical bullying involves real bodily contact between a bully and his or her victim for the express purpose of intimidation or control over the victim† (What Is Physical). This interaction develops into a feeling of satisfaction for the bully because their have done what they intended to accomplish--establish anxiety into the life of the suffer. However, the pain does not end there for some students. Many students suffer from imperfections in their bodies due to the physical contact. Some of which includes bruises, cuts, and scars, leaving a constant reminder of middle school for the rest of their lives. Physical bullyi... ... who are repeatedly bullied receive poorer grades and participate less in class discussions. Some students may get labeled as low achievers because they do not want to speak up in class for fear of getting bullied. Teachers can misinterpret their silence, thinking that these students are not motivated to learn† (Wolpert). Without doing well in school, many students are hurting their chances to be successful in life. Bullying causes a students to feel like they do not have fulfillment in their lives. Because of bullying, many students suffer. Because of bullying, many middle school students suffer in more than one area, just as smoke can affect a persons health in more than one area. It affect student’s body, mind, and school work. To help correct this, peers need to step up if they see someone being bullied, for the health of the bully, victim, and community.

Against School: A Corrupted System

The educational systems purpose is to prepare people with the necessary skills and knowledge so that they can excel and function properly in today’s society. John T. Gatto challenges that idea and begs the question is 12 compulsory years of standard schooling consisting of six classes a day, five days a week, nine months a year needed? Gatto refers to George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln as they were not formally schooled and yet were very successful. According to Gatto’s, there are three main purposes to formal schooling, â€Å"1) To make good people, 2) To make good citizens, and 3) to make each person his or her best. † (Gatto 3) Gatto believes that the current educational system actually contradicts these three ideals. He claims that there are six basic yet specific functions that intend to hold back and limit the progress and overall success of a student. Of the six functions there are three serve specifically to limit and hinder a students progress. The diagnostic and directive functions, the differentiating function, and the propaedeutic function all seemingly serve to cripple a students success but when analyzed some do hold some truth but in the end they are merely irrational and ridiculous accusations made by Gatto. The diagnostic and directive functions are defined as a litmus test to test where a particular student â€Å"fits† in society based on grade percentages. These percentages are logged and stored permanently in our student records which are then passed on the post secondary schools to place students in their â€Å"proper societal roles† (4). During my freshman and sophomore years in high school I can not help but remember teachers classifying â€Å"ap† students and high academic achievers as those who were going to be â€Å"successful†. My math teacher often referred to more difficult questions as the â€Å"doctor† or â€Å"lawyer† question in an attempt to scale the difficultly of the question. What if one can not do the question? Does that mean that person should be classified as remedial or can not attain the success of a doctor or lawyer? Of course not, the simple idea of that is completely irrational. However, once reassessing and making them less extreme, Gatto’s diagnostic and directive functions can be found anywhere in the academic system whether it be perquisite knowledge for grade twelve programs or university entrance. While this function may seem absurd, Gatto’s differentiating function is one that can be related to actual everyday life. The differentiating function is a more practical function. It states that, â€Å"once a student’s role has been â€Å"diagnosed† through standardized testing, they are to be sorted by role, and trained only so far as their destination in the social machine merits. † (5) The functions practical use is especially seen in post secondary schooling where a more refined and â€Å"specialized training† takes place. We see this in any standard entry test for a specific program such as the SAT, LSAT or MCAT. Based on a students performance on these forms of testing they are then place in their respective programs allow them to focus specifically on areas of study that are important to them. At my old high school there was a standard entry test, SSAT, that examined various categories of schooling (math, reading, writing etc†¦) Depending on how you did on the test would determine not only whether or not you are eligible for acceptance but whether or not you qualify to take ap courses, because if u do not posses the proper knowledge taking a more advanced course would be counter-productive and in fact hurt your academic career. Once one has analyzed the differentiating function there is some truth to it but when one looks at the propaedeutic function, it is completely incorrect. The propaedeutic function is completely incorrect and misleading. According to Gatto, the purpose of the propaedeutic is to create a class of â€Å"elite caretakers †¦ taught to manage this project, how to watch over and control a population deliberately dumbed down and declawed† (5) He’s saying that those who already control the population are going to educate children so that when they grow up they can control the population and train more children to do the same. At this point it seems like Gatto is trying to throw something that is completely and utterly irrational out there trying to catch people off guard and hope to attract some followers. The simple thought that people were training young children to know how to manipulate people in such a way that they simply do not challenge authority and do exactly as their told to is ridiculous. At no point in my life have I ever felt that someone or an organization is trying to limit my personal abilities to comply with this absurd function. Teachers constantly enthuse student to be all they can and achieve as high as they can, not that its ok if u cant because we already got it figured out. While other of Gatto’s functions may have held some truth this particular function is completely incorrect Gatto believes that those who control the way society runs are trying to create a norm in the educational system. That student’s are pre-destined before they are given the ample chance to excel and achieve. Gatto explains that schools traditionally have three purposes: 1) To make good people; 2) To make good citizens; 3) To make each student find some particular talents to develop as best they can. These are all fine standards but because of government schools have become prison like even in there cell block style construction. Gatto’s approach is very liberal and has opened my eyes to certain matters especially the way that educational system is poorly constructed (with it being bases on grades) and how it is mismanaged leading to sub-par performance and disappointing â€Å"success† rates. It is this poorly constructed system and a corrupted way of running it is what I think Gatto was truly trying to revile.

The Danger of Using Literature and Fiction as a Historical...

Literature and fiction can be dangerous to use alone as a historical source. However, in looking at it with an analytical and open mind and incorporating it with textbooks, readers can gain tremendous knowledge from literature. Looking at the portrayal of a topic by an author is important. All authors write with specific audiences in mind, and with an intention or point. Understanding the point that authors strive to convey can reveal a great deal about opinions and perspectives of the time period. Literature is absolutely essential to world history. The insights in fiction go far beyond that of textbook learning. Gender roles, the role of the court, and romances are effectively portrayed in fiction, and convey insights that are different from those in a textbook. The role of males in Aristocratic Japan and Italy was far superior to women. Both Heian Japan and Renaissance Italy accepted a sexual double standard. For example, extra marital affairs were normal for men. They were even openly discussed. In Italy, though men could only have one wife at a time, there were high death rates, so many people married more than once in their lives. Wealthy Japanese men most commonly had concubines. Although Christianity in Italy had prohibited concubines, wealthy men did have mistresses, who did not have any legal standing.
